The Lunch @ DC with Maksim Kitsak

Urban transportation systems are vulnerable to congestion, accidents, weather, special events, and other costly delays. But while policy solutions to these problems typically address efficiency improvements, investment in strengthening resiliency – a system’s ability to recover from additional disruptions – is scarce. Dr. Kitsak joins us to share US Army Corps of Engineers team’s analysis of 40 US transportation networks for both qualities and weigh in on what this means for Washington, DC – who scored amongst the worst transportation networks in their study.

Dr. Kitsak is an Associate Research Scientist in the Network Science Institute at Northeastern University and the consultant for the US Army Corps of Engineers. Dr. Kitsak earned a Ph.D. in theoretical physics from Boston University in 2009 under the direction of Prof. H. E. Stanley. Dr. Kitsak has held postdoctoral positions at the Center for Applied Internet Data Analysis (CAIDA), UC San Diego (2009-2012); and the Center for Complex Network Research (CCNR), Northeastern University (2012-2014). His research focuses on theoretical and computational approaches to networked systems.

Dr. Igor Linkov, Research Physical Scientist, Environmental Laboratory, U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) was recognized with the Stem Individual Award by the Chief of Engineers, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Headquarters. He is part of the Risk and Decision Science Team and the Risk and Decision Science Focus Area. Dr. Linkov has demonstrated exceptional dedication and leadership in advancing the Corps of Engineers’ STEM message. He has initiated innovative efforts aimed at recruiting and retaining STEM professionals , has provided internship opportunities to dozens of students annually, and has participated in the U.S. Army’s educational outreach programs. Dr. Linkov’s leadership has resulted in a thriving internship program that hosts approximately 15 students per year and in an increased awareness of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), both for its exceptional career opportunities and for the cutting-edge research it conducts. He is the Senior Author and instituion in charge of this work.
